Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf Jr., the famous United States Army General, who served as a commander of the United States Central Command in the Gulf War once rightly said: “The more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war.”
This is so true for most of the occasions. Training is the essence of our survival in today’s world which is so competitive. Acquiring knowledge is important but if someone is unable to translate that knowledge into practice, that knowledge is of no use to almost anyone. Training of any kind allows us to learn this art of translating our acquired knowledge into practice thus earning income which is the basis of survival. The society which we live in can be rightly described as “Industrial.” This is so because modern civilization and society has become so complex and interconnected that one just can't live in isolation from others. One needs too many things to live the comfort of their life and these things can only be produced by “industries” with the utilisation of available materials and human resources. We can't imagine how our life would turn out if we can't obtain the things that we have become so used to. All the production of these goods and services requires the proper working of an industry which is dependent to a large extent on the skills and abilities of those who actually work in the production. This is the reason why industrial training is so important to our world. So, as now we have some sort of ideas about industrial training and its importance, we can now go on to define it and also note down its objectives, usefulness and importance in complete detail.
Industrial training may be defined as “a programme of a fixed duration designed specifically for newly graduates or graduating students of certain fields including technical such as engineering which is meant to teach them certain kinds of practical knowledge and skills that would enable them to translate their newly-acquired knowledge into practice.”
So, as the above definition suggests, Industrial training is what makes one truly employable.
The core of the fact can be understood from the following case scenarios. Let us say, a student works quite hard to first get into one of the good institutes to acquire knowledge. After exhausting and time-consuming learning by devoting a good part of his life to this, he acquires the requisite knowledge and passes the final examination. Now, if he thinks that he would be hired by any good firm, he is clearly mistaken and quite wrong. It is true that knowledge is important and recruiters and employers do give due credit and weightage to knowledge but there is no denial of the fact that their decisions are highly influenced by the skill-sets that the candidates possess. As industrial training inculcates in one, the ability to put knowledge into practice, it gives quite an upper hand to those who are trained over the others who are not. Who do you think the employer will select for a job? The ones with knowledge who might not prove to be beneficial for a company or the ones who along with knowledge has undergone a 6-month industrial training as well? The right answer here is of course the latter i.e. the ones with both knowledge and skill that are necessary to function in industries today.
There are certain objectives to be achieved by every action. Here, we have no exception. The objectives and purposes of Industrial training are many and varied. The following describes them in concise but effective manner:
To succeed at any workplace, one must know other soft skills as well. One might happen to be an expert in his area of expertise, but if he/she does not have basic soft skills such as communication skills, he would find it much harder to succeed as failure to communicate will hurt his competency badly and then he might not be able to work in any team as may be required. So, Industrial training also aims to impart these kinds of soft skills which would help them prepare for future endeavors.
This one is quite important. It is important to recall that those undergoing Industrial training are just graduating and most of them are new to the workforce and have no real idea of how things are done in an industrial setting or workplace. So, industrial training provides them with the required exposure to the real working condition and workplace, they get some sort of experience from. The newly acquired experience proves to be quite helpful for them when they get employed at some place after their training is complete. The workplace then does not seem to be new and alien to them and they feel more comfortable and hence more productive.
As now industrially trained, the person becomes attractive to potential employers who might want to hire him/her. As many employers would want to hire the same person, they would be willing to offer him/her more money and then it would be up to the person to decide with whom he/she wants to work. He is now likely to get a job offer with a better salary.
There is a saying “Honesty is the best policy.” This is so true morally for almost every situation. But the reality is, we people need to be imbibed with moral values through a system of proper encouragement and reward-punishment mechanism. These moral principles and values need to be revisited and re-imparted throughout our lives. No one can trust a person who is devoid of such basic moral values such as honesty, trustworthiness, responsibility, discipline, etc. The trainees are placed in such situations and given guidance in such a manner as to instill in them, these basic moral principles which would not only make them better human beings but also more employable.
Up until now, the trainees who are used to their student life-style and behaviour are now during the training period transformed into well-disciplined employees who would behave in a mature manner now and would whole-heartedly devote themselves to the work they would be about to enter.
Every action is performed keeping in mind certain desired outcomes. Industrial training is no exception here. Like any other action or activity, there are certain outcomes which are expected to be achieved through it. These expected outcomes are given below in a concise manner:
The most important expected outcome of any Industrial training is to make the person undergoing such training, capable of transforming his knowledge into practice with ease. The whole purpose of training revolves around this outcome of making the trainees capable by imparting them the requisite skills that they need.
This is expected that through training, the trainees would come to imbibe certain soft skills such as communication skills which would enable them to communicate to their fellow colleagues effectively and work through communication to create a conducive working environment which would enable him/her to meet the production targets and goals of the firm.
Working in an industrial setting and succeeding there, one needs to have the ability to correctly identify the problems that need solutions and at the same time, offer a feasible solution to such technical problems as may be needed. To have the trainees equipped with such high-level thinking and problem solving capabilities are of the primary expected outcomes of the training.
Science is a growing subject. New ideas are being added to it on a daily basis and the old ones are tested and refined and sometimes remodelled based on newly discovered data from experiments. Industries now face too much competition among themselves and they need to improve themselves to compete with each other. For this, they need to make their products much better. All this is possible only with research. Research allows industries to invest some resources in finding new techniques and new solutions to existing problems. Research is constantly changing how things are made. Industrial training is expected to equip the trainees with enough skills and confidence that they can research in a particular field of study and hence contribute more broadly to the industries.
Industries are more or less profit-seeking concerns. So now this becomes important that the trainees that are going to work in the industry understand these basic concepts and while working there, do not waste the precious resources. This value and understanding is a very important outcome to be expected from this training.
Every workplace needs a leader. Leader is the one who allots work among the members of the team and sees that the works are completed on time. The outcome expected here is the trainee develops some leadership qualities so that when the time comes, he/she is ready to rise to the occasion and take leadership in production activities.
Trainees while working at an industry would be producing products. They would also be designing many products which when approved would be produced and sold in the relevant marketplaces. The outcome expected here is that they come to acquire the sense of responsibility as their designed products would be widely available in the markets. They need to keep in mind that the designs should be flawless or it might cause more harm than good. As working in production, one needs to take care that production is going on as per standard operating protocols so that no faulty product ends up in the market which can cause many harms.

1. Ability
This one can be considered to be the most important objective of industrial training. The primary purpose of any training is to impart certain kinds of skills which would help one in putting in practice what he/she already knows. Industrial training teaches and gives one the requisite skills using which he/she can effectively use his/her knowledge to achieve the pre-defined goals of the company or firm where he would be working. Knowledge without practical applications is not of much use afterall.
